Surfacing

My work has evolved from a lifelong study of yoga philosophy and in response to a fascination with the working of the unconscious mind.

Meditative practice, flow theory, Jungian psychology and surrealism combine to inspire an automatic approach to process, where the potter's wheel is central to the practice.

The activity of throwing vessels on a wheel - inducing a meditative state through repetition, while staying alert to the process - contributes to freeing oneself from the ego-based mind.

The vessel is an expression of emotional states and recurring patterns. Spontaneous mark-making and layering with porcelain slip begin to capture opposing forces within. The light and the dark, the comfortable and the uncomfortable, the blistering and the smooth are all welcome as they begin to surface on the pots.
